The collection consists of the numerically coded central files of the SIO Office of the Director. The material in this collection includes files created and collected by Edward A. Frieman, who served as director of the institution from 1986-1996, and Wolfgang Berger, who served as acting director of the institution from 1996-1998, and their office staffs. The records include correspondence, memoranda, scientific reports, financial records, proposals, minutes of meetings, and other materials that document the planning, administration, and daily operation of SIO. The collection includes material on all SIO administrative units. The records include files on conferences and symposia held at SIO, files on distinguished visitors, and files documenting the development of the Scripps campus. There is also material on gifts and endowments, international cooperation, personnel, and committees. The collection includes substantial material documenting the relationship between SIO and federal and international agencies. The collection includes material documenting SIO research in global climate change.

Edward Allan Frieman was appointed eighth director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography UCSD, UCSD Vice Chancellor of Marine Science and Dean of Marine Sciences on July 1, 1986 by UCSD Chancellor Richard C.
